Dr. Fumihiko Namba MD, Ph.D.  

Dr. Fumihiko Namba is a neonatal intensive care physician-scientist working in one of the largest NICUs in Japan. Dr. Namba is a Professor of Pediatrics at Saitama Medical Center, Saitama Medical University. Driven by a passion for research and patient care, Dr. Namba’s primary focus lies in prematurity-related diseases, notably bronchopulmonary dysplasia, patent ductus arteriosus, and retinopathy of prematurity. His research approach is comprehensive, encompassing various methodologies such as in vitro/in vivo models, cohort studies, clinical trials, national databases, and systematic review and meta-analysis. As a testament to his expertise and dedication, Dr. Namba is a valued board member of the Japan Society for Neonatal Health and Development, where he also serves as the chair of its International Liaison Committee. Dr. Namba’s journey into medicine began in the west of Japan, where he was born and raised. He earned his medical degree from Okayama University before undertaking a residency in Pediatrics at Okayama University Hospital and its affiliated medical centers. Delving deeper into neonatal intensive care, he completed specialized training at Okayama Medical Center and Osaka Medical Center and Research Institute for Maternal and Child Health. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, he pursued and successfully obtained a Ph.D. in perinatology from Osaka University. Further enriching his expertise, Dr. Namba pursued a postdoctoral fellowship in Neonatology at the renowned Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, working under the mentorship of Dr. Phyllis Dennery. Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Namba finds joy and support in his family. He currently resides in Tokyo with his wife and two beloved daughters.
